                                                                    CHAPTER I

 

 

 

Peter Flatwood meets Gideon Allgood in London.  Franklin takes Flatwood by car to Maidstone.  En route he reads a letter from Allgood telling him that Jane's death thirty-five years ago was faked, and that Flatwood has been "called to service.

Introduces Elmore Brasted.  He buys the old Avery house.  Introduces his best friend, Caleb Wimberly, through whom we learn about his lover, Delphine Higgins, a Foreign Service officer.

Still en route to his rendezvous with Jane Wellright, Peter Flatwood agonizes over the commitment he made at Oxford thirty-five years earlier to the mysterious Sir Joshua.  More on his background and feelings for Jane.

Introduces Beulah Belle Blount.  She meets Brasted.

Delphine Higgins, waiting in the White House briefing room, reviews in her mind her association with Green Angel and the personalities of its members.

                                           CHAPTER II

 

Beulah Belle Blount and Elmore Brasted get to know each other.  Romantic union in the making.  She tells him about the Avery ghost and they agree to search the attic.

Delphine Higgins briefs President Wisener and the Green Angel Committee on status of Green Angel.  Conflicts among principals.  Wisener gives order to go ahead with Green.

 Peter Flatwood flashbacks to his and Jane's trip to Maidstone and All Souls Church thirty-five years earlier.  Background on both of them and their romance at Oxford.

Elmore Brasted and Beulah Belle Blount find an original copy of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (MDI) in the Avery house.  Beulah Belle explains its importance.  Romantic union confirmed.

                                           CHAPTER III

 

A meeting between Peter Flatwood and Jane Wellright in All Souls Church.  Jane begins briefing Peter on Brass Cup; offers monarchy to Peter when Empire is established; tells Peter she knows about Green Angel.

Asbury Wisener and Credulous Raper meet.  Insight into their relationship.  Roles of Rebecca Wisener and Brinia Hunsucker in the White House.  Wisener as a womanizer.

Beulah Belle and Elmore Brasted deliver the newly found MDI to Professor Drage in the dead of night.  En route, Beulah Belle tells Elmore some history of MDI  An agonizing decision to announce MDI publicly.

Conclusion of Jane/Peter meeting at All Souls.  Jane reveals that Green Angel is British run.  Jane will not tell Peter her true name.  She reminds Peter of his earlier commitment to Brass Cup.  He agrees to add closer political ties to Canada to his presidential campaign platform.  Their sad separation.

                                                                  CHAPTER IV

 

 Dr. Theodorus Drage publically announces the finding and authentication of MDI; declares Jefferson a plagiarist; calls for changing the U.S. day of independence to May 20, 1775; mentions The Other.

 Delphine thinks about: Sexual signals from President Wisener; Caleb Wimberly arriving in Washington from North Carolina; what her private meeting with the President is all about.

Delphine meets privately with President Wisener.  He does not make a pass.  Instead, he recruits her to spy on members of the Green Angel Committee.

Y. Yates Chiddingstone briefs Peter Flatwood on their Brass Cup roles in Washington.  Y. Yates also recommends certain political actions Flatwood should take in his campaign and suggests he recruit Beulah Belle Frid and Elmore Brasted because of their MDI connection.

                                                                   CHAPTER V

 

Woolsen Dickharver reviews problems and costs of authenticating MDI.  Beulah Belle says Drage can raise the money needed.  MDI is dated within nine days of May 20, 1775.

Delphine Higgins meets with Attorney General Anabel Craighead.  Develops Craighead's personality and management style.

The politics of MDI.  Academe attacks Dr. Drage for MDI announcement.  Peter Flatwood announces he favors "bracing" political ties with Canada.

Delphine Higgins briefs Peter Flatwood on current status of Green Angel.  Peter reacts to Delphine's when she tells him of the new security checks that Lamberhurst has planned.

Delphine tells her secretary to find out from Thurston whether the next CIA security check will be done on the Americans or the Canadians in Green Angel.

Congresswoman Betty-Tom Godbold, (D. Mass) in a press interview demands that Drage be stripped of his honors and tried for treason.

                                                                  CHAPTER VI

 

Caleb Wimberly confronts Delphine Higgins with grave security errors she has made.

British ambassador Ignatius Sump warns Peter Flatwood that Y. Yates Chiddingstone may be a con man.

Fredonia Dreggs tells Ophelia Ponypridd about overhearing a significant conversation between Peter Flatwood and Y. Yates Chiddingstone.  As a lark, they agree to try to destroy Flatwood politically.

Developments in the governments case against Dr. Drage for treason.  Elmore Brasted and Beulah Belle Blount are invited to cookout at Peter Flatwood's house.

Thurston tells Delphine Higgins that Coxheath Lamberhurst wants to know if she has reason to distrust anyone on Green Angel.  He demands an answer.

            Delphine asks President Wisener to make the CIA stop pressuring her about Green Angel security checks; Thurston warns her she is not qualified to play the Washington game.

Dr. Sughosa hypnotizes Fredonia Dreggs and recovers the conversation she overheard between Peter Flatwood and Y. Yates Chiddingstone that reveals critical information about Brass Cup and the existence of Jane.

At a cookout at the Flatwood's, Elmore Brasted and Beulah Belle Blount are recruited to push MDI as a Flatwood campaign issue.  They meet Y. Yates Chiddingstone and Veronica Flatwood.

Conclusion of Flatwood cookout.  Y. Yates Chiddingstone briefs Beulah Belle Blount and Elmore Brasted on the history of The Other and its planned place in the presidential campaign.  Veronica Flatwood's drinking problem shows.

                                                                  CHAPTER VIII

 

Veronica Flatwood reveals her true feelings for her husband, Peter.  Veronica and Ophelia Ponypridd form an alliance to "get" Peter Flatwood.  Ophelia's affair with Y. Yates Chiddingstone surfaces.  Veronica acknowledges a drinking problem.

Peter Flatwood announces his candidacy for President.  Political issues in 1999 are reviewed.  Flatwood threatens Y. Yates if The Other is false.

Liberal and conservative views of MDI and other political issues dividing the parties.  Beulah Belle's success in making the case for MDI.  Y. Yates tries to convince Flatwood of the merits of his political campaign.

Flatwood hires Caleb Wimberly as his campaign security chief.  Delphine Higgins is not happy with Caleb's continued absence.  Delphine is suddenly ordered to the White House.

Ophelia Ponypridd reports to Veronica Flatwood that Allgood of Scotland Yard stopped her efforts in England to find Jane.  Allgood learns that Veronica instigated the search for Jane.

Credulous Raper and Coxheath Lamberhurst threaten Delphine Higgins with jail for herself and Wimberly for breach of Green Angel security.  Her alternative is to spy on the Flatwood campaign to learn what The Other is.

Peter Flatwood meets with Franklin at the National Cathedral to read Allgood's letter about Ophelia Ponypridd's visit to London to trace Jane and link her to Peter Flatwood.  Allgood asks Flatwood and Chiddingstone to prepare a damage report.

At a picnic at Drage's house, Peter Flatwood decides to brief Drage on The Other only to find he already knows about it.  Flatwood and staff frolic in the creek.  Delphine Higgins puts in a surprise appearance.

                                                                   CHAPTER X

 

President Wisener is concerned that something may go wrong with his campaign and imperil his reelection.  Credulous Raper reassures him that everything is hand and that Delphine is working to find out what The Other is.  If she does that, Wisener will make a pass at her.

Peter Flatwood and Y. Yates Chiddingstone jointly reply to Gideon Allgood's letter of concern about breaches of Brass Cup security.  They assess the damage and recommend Brass Cup continue.

Brinia Hunsucker tells Credulous Raper that Veronica Flatwood called her to ask for an appointment to meet Raper.  He deduces that the phone call was another attempt by Rebecca Wisener to trick him.

Peter Flatwood and Jeanne D'arc Morency (Dart) argue about the logic of Charlotte for the Republican Convention.  Peter makes the case to win the election for the Noble Cause.  He explains why he must keep The Other secret Other until the strategic moment.

                                                                  CHAPTER XI

 

Beulah Belle Blount tells Peter Flatwood that she destroyed Woolsen Dickharver's report on The Other because it was faulty, and that he, Peter, should not read it, after he read it.  The report concluded that the Canadian signatures on The Other were forged.

Veronica Flatwood tells Ophelia Ponypridd she will sabotage Peter Flatwood as the Republican Convention, denouncing him as a traitor.  She wants Asbury Wisener to prosecute Peter for treason in exchange for information about The Other.

Higgins and Peter Flatwood discuss mysticism and millenarianism in 2000.  Delphine reveals Art. XI of the Articles of Confederation designed to admit Canada into the Union.  Peter is elated.

Beulah Belle Blount outlines Peter Flatwood's strategy to make The Other public in the Presidential campaign.  Peter makes Beulah Belle and Y. Yates Chiddingstone confirm that all is right with The Other.

Credulous Raper admonishes Charlie LaFlume for his failure to uncover The Other.  LaFlume, in defense, describes Congresswoman Godbold's efforts to destroy MDI, Drage, and Flatwood.  LaFlume counter charges Raper with failure to learn about The Other from Veronica Flatwood, which Rebecca Wisener confirms.  Wisener fires Raper, but orders him to make Delphine Higgins to uncover The Other.

Woolsen Dickharver asks Beulah Belle to release him from the Flatwood campaign because he is afraid after being threatened and offered bribes for information about The Other.  He confesses his secret love for Beulah Belle.

Delphine Higgins tries to get Caleb Wimberly to tell her what The Other is.  He refuses.  She breaks their relationship.

                                                                  CHAPTER XIII

 

Flatwood explains to Ophelia Ponypridd why she will Anabel Craighead instead of Credulous Raper to help her deny Peter Flatwood the Republican nomination for President and how she will do it.

On the way to the Charlotte Coliseum where Peter Flatwood is to accept the Republican nomination for President, his wife, Veronica, tells him how she plans to deny him the nomination, and that Attorney General Anabel Craighead is going to charge him with treason.

Some years in her retirement, Bertha Soonsbonne recounts events of that last night of the Republican Convention in Charlotte

Jeanne D'arc Morency stalls the Republican Convention while Peter Flatwood meets with Beulah Belle Blount and Brass Cup operatives to deal with the crisis created by Veronica Flatwood's threat to expose Peter as a traitor.  Word arrives that Delphine Higgins was murdered.  Beulah Belle is nominated for President and calls for Empire.
